Coaching

What is required of an effective coach? A good ear and an ability to really listen is fundamental, but there is so much more.  It does not require expertise in the field.  A coach doesn't "tell".  Coaching is unlocking people's potential to maximise their own performance.  It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them. As one of the foremost experts in coaching, John Whitmore says, "It is hard for an expert to withhold their expertise sufficiently to coach well".  Coaching should result in improved performance and/or wellbeing, otherwise why do it?  The role of a senior leader in today's schools is complex and there is rarely 'down' time where you have time to reflect.  Providing that space for coaching can do that.  Over the years I have found it is not just about coaching for work, as of course home life plays a role in one's overall wellbeing.  My background in mental health, as well as my own battles with depression in the past, has given me an empathy and ability to hear that is needed in modern leadership coaching.
